Who we are - Advisory Council

Advisory Council members
The Advisory Council functions as the eyes and ears of the Missional Leadership Team (MLT). They do discernment together, work on issues, listen, bring their own agenda, and help MLT get a sense of what is going on in the conference. The AC is a discerning, advising and recommending body.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Romans 8:28 was a key verse during my struggle with childhood leukemia and it challenges me to keep pursuing my calling.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Matt 10:7-8 “As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” (NIV) This scripture challenges me to be about Christ's ministry—it reminds me that we need a balance between proclaiming and doing.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Psalm 139—it talks about God’s love and care for us. When I was in Junior High, our Bible school teacher taught and modeled this scripture to us. It made an impression on me and now it’s a passage that I refer to often and find reassuring.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: The prayer of Jesus in John 17 and especially verse 23 where Jesus prays; "May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." I long for the church to come to such a unity that the world would know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Jesus we serve was sent by God. When this happens I believe they will want to be a part of us.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Colossians 1:9-10 My heart's desire is to recognize the presence of Christ as I journey through life, to be transformed by that intimate presence and to invite others to join the journey of knowing Christ more intimately.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me:
Hebrews 1:5 “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without
reproach, and it will be given to him.” This was a verse that my mother taught me, to give me confidence when I was a little girl. It has served me well through adolescence, my twenties, and now during my parenting years.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Isaiah 43:1-2 “…Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name; you are mine. When you
pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon you.” We live in a culture of fear and I refuse to submit to a culture of fear.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Proverbs 16:3 “Commit they works unto the Lord and thy thoughts shall be established.” This is meaningful to me because before I found the Lord, my own understanding lured me into a lot of trouble, and when I allowed Jesus into my life I was able to see His vision for my life and all people.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: That Romans text is a challenge for us Mennonites in that Paul goes on to add the power of signs and wonders as being integral to the witness.  We have a lot  to learn about prayer and miracle - Christians in other cultures can teach us much.  The God we worship is the One who leads us into mission, where God is already going ahead of us.  This is so encouraging - it isn't just up to us to think up what good stuff to do next.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: 1 Peter 3:15. This passage is meaningful for me because it reminds us that  people around us want to know why we act differently, why our vision is upside down compared to the world.  We need be prepared to pass on,  with joy in our heart,  what is the reason of our faith.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: God's breath-taking love for each of us, for "the least of these," and even for enemies is the heart of the Christian good news.  Many of us in our churches are on a journey, with both an inner and an outer dimension, to more fully enter the flow of God's life-changing and world-transforming love. This is why one of my favorite scriptures is the prayer in Ephesians 3: 14-19 that we may be rooted and grounded in God's love.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Colossians 3:12-17. I have turned to this scripture in many different situations. It has positive directions for living as God’s chosen ones and has been helpful in times of distress as well as in times of celebration. The words are so very visual and paint pictures and create images that flow and radiate.

Kent Miller, Amigo Centre representative

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Psalm 9:1-2 has been a focus verse for me over the past 20 years of ministry as it embraces thankfulness, the wonders of God's works (which for me come in the redemptive work of Christ and God's revelation through creation!), and the verse proclaims the lifting of our voices in grateful praise.  These have been passions of mine through my spiritual walk.

A Scripture passage that is meaningful to me: Romans 12:1-2. In working with young people at Bethany, I often see these verses taking on vibrant life as students and their adult mentors are "transformed by the renewing of their minds" to grow in the capacity to discern the will of God for their lives.
